I grew up in a small town in Mississippi. Since we did not have a lot to do, our biggest weekend thrill was Friday night football and driving around the courthouse square on Saturday night with our friends. I would usually drive my Chevrolet Vega, and we would pack as many of my friends as we could into that hatchback. Everyone would cruise around the square with the radio playing, singing along with the latest tunes, laughing, and trying to convince one of the girls to be our girlfriend for the night! We would occasionally stop the cars at the curb, and everyone would get out and switch cars. This way, we had plenty of time to visit with all our friends before curfew. I look back on those days with fond memories, but I also think about how unproductive those times were! Burning gasoline, taking up several hours on a Saturday night, and going around in circles, ending at the same place we started.

Did you know that many people’s lives are like our Saturday night cruises? They are wasting time, burning up years of their life, going around in circles, and never getting anywhere. This is not the life that our Lord wants us to have! Jesus said that he came to “give us life abundantly.” What is an abundant life? It is not money, but a life of making a difference in the world for Jesus. Loving your neighbors, helping the poor and needy, sharing Jesus with people by action and by word, and ministering in His name.

This is why Balmoral Baptist Church exists. It is not only a gathering place for the members. It is here to be the hands and feet of Jesus to this part of Memphis. Our focus is outward. Our work is to equip us to reach people in the name of our Lord. As we continue to move through this YEAR OF CARING, will you do your part? Let’s not go around in circles. Let’s go forward in the Lord.
